NYC dancefloor originals and their modern club reworks · 1977 to now

REINTERPRETATIONS / THE DANCE EDITION

A reinterpretation is not a tribute. It is a new record that takes a confirmed sample, cover, interpolation, or commissioned edit of a canonical NYC dance original and rebuilds it for a current floor. Every pairing here is grounded in a credible source (WhoSampled, label or official credits, or press) and both sides carry a verified embeddable YouTube upload. Pop, hip-hop, R&B, and rock reworks were cut. What remains is dancefloor lineage only.

Jocelyn Brown's 1984 single, released on Vinyl Dreams and distributed by Prelude, was a New York club record long before it was a sample source. When Chloé Caillet and Luke Alessi released 'The One' on it in 2025, the a cappella they had been playing proved hard to clear; Brown had already recorded a new vocal of the song herself, and that re-sing is the voice on the new record.

Recorded for First Choice's 1977 album Delusions on Salsoul's Gold Mind imprint, and a Paradise Garage record, above all in the 1983 Salsoul 12-inch whose Shep Pettibone mix and a cappella are what later house tracks draw on. Salsoul released Dam Swindle's rework itself in 2021; the Bicep version is an unofficial DJ edit that has circulated since 2016 through their mixes and rips of them.

Cut in 1980 for Salsoul's Gold Mind imprint with Dan Hartman writing and producing, and one of the records Larry Levan kept returning to at the Paradise Garage. Holloway's voice is among the most sampled in dance music; this is the record behind Black Box's 'Ride on Time' and Marky Mark's 'Good Vibrations'. It returns here two ways: a tech-house record built on the vocal, and a disco-house rework Salsoul released itself.

The B-side of Kenny Dope and Louie Vega's first 12-inch as Masters at Work, on Cutting Records in 1991, built around a chant sampled from Trading Places. The crash on the fourth beat became the cue for the dip in vogue battles. Willi Ninja told Louie Vega, 'That is our anthem. We use it all the time to battle.' The two records that follow are built on that crash.
