Avant-garde and downtown-music institution, founded in Manhattan and now in Williamsburg.

The Knitting Factory opened on Houston Street in 1987 as a home for avant-garde jazz, experimental, and downtown music, and later relocated to Williamsburg. It is widely cited within the city's experimental-music history across genres. Its earliest addresses are not all captured here.
