The Sanctuary

407 West 43rd Street · Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan40.7589° N / 73.9923° W

Overview

Club in a deconsecrated church often cited as an early site of continuous DJ mixing and gay dancefloor culture.

Housed in a former German Baptist church, The Sanctuary is often cited within the prehistory of disco — an early room associated with continuous DJ mixing and a largely gay crowd. It is frequently named alongside Francis Grasso's residency. The short-lived space is remembered as a hinge between 1960s discotheques and the dancefloors that followed.
