The Loft
Overview
David Mancuso's invitation-only rent party, often cited as a foundational space for New York's dance underground.
The Loft began on February 14, 1970 as David Mancuso's invitation-only rent party, remembered for an audiophile sound system and an eclectic, non-commercial, host-led approach. It is widely cited as a foundational reference point for New York's dance underground. The party ran at 647 Broadway (1970–74) and then 99 Prince Street (1975–85) before moving to Alphabet City addresses, including Avenue A and Avenue B. Mancuso died in 2016 and the party has continued in his memory — so its 'close date' is genuinely contested. The listed coordinates mark the original Broadway location.
