Biography

Larry Levan is widely remembered as the resident DJ of the Paradise Garage, where his long Saturday-night sets and attention to the room's sound system are often cited as foundational to what became known as garage. He is associated with an emotive, eclectic approach to programming and with a devoted, largely Black and Latino, queer crowd.

Levan's sets are usually described as the template for what became known as 'garage' — gospel- and soul-rooted disco stretched toward early house and dub, played long and dramatically on a famously tuned sound system. Accounts emphasise emotional arc and an unusually wide palette over any single genre.
